Splatoon 3 Has Outperformed Every Other Switch Launch In Japan

An inkredible performance

Splatoon 3 has proved an even bigger domestic hit than anyone predicted, becoming Japan’s fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game.

According to Nintendo, Splatoon 3 has shipped over 3.45million units in Japan in the three days since its release. This includes both physical and digital sales. The previous domestic record-holder was Animal Crossing: New Horizons which shipped 1.88million units over the same period. Splatoon 3 has become Nintendo’s best domestic launch on the Nintendo Switch.

In a company news release, Nintendo shared “Representative director and president: Shuntaro Furukawa announced that domestic sales of the Splatoon 3 game for the Nintendo Switch system have surpassed 3.45 million units in the first three days since its launch on September 9, 2022,” the statement concluded with “This is the highest domestic sales level for any Nintendo Switch software within the first three days.”

For comparison, Splatoon 2 sold approximately 648k during its launch period. This marks a huge growth in sales for the series — showcasing just how important Splatoon has become for Nintendo.

Splatoon’s performance was less impressive in the United Kingdom. Though this marks the first appearance of the series at the top of the UK boxed charts, Splatoon 3 performed 9% worse than its predecessor in launching physical sales in the UK. That being said, the title may have performed stronger in digital sales, a metric the chart doesn’t track (via GamesIndustry.biz).

Prior to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the Switch’s biggest launch in Japan was Pokémon Sword and Shield which sold 1.3million during its opening three days. Splatoon 3 has handily outperformed these launches in Japan, once again showing the series’ growing popularity.

Splatoon 3 has improved upon the formula of its predecessors, adding several new features in the process. According to our list, the most welcome addition is the test area now being useable during the match queue. This feature has proved popular in titles like FIFA and Rocket League. Though this feature allows queued friends to enter the testing area together, there are currently large latency issues specifically in the testing area.
